Écriture, notation, partition, au coeur de la création chorégraphique ?

Eliott Meunier intitulait en septembre dernier une réflexion sur la notation de la danse « La partition chorégraphique : son histoire et son évolution ». L’utilisation du terme « partition » invitait au raisonnement par analogie avec la partition musicale. La contribution très documentée rappelait l’existence, de longue date, de systèmes de notation. Pour autant, la pratique des chorégraphes comme celle des interprètes ne s’appuie pas, même de nos jours, sur une partition. Du moins, comme le soulignait justement Eliott, elle n’est pas le point de passage obligé pour la création chorégraphique et en cela, il pouvait rassurer l’une des lectrices…

Introduction

Comme journaliste spécialisée et comme universitaire sociologue, j’ai longtemps soutenu que les chorégraphes comme les danseurs n’avaient pas besoin d’écriture, du moins d’une écriture linéaire, spatialisable sur une page.

Il n’empêche que le langage des créateurs s’inscrit dans l’ordre graphique même si l’espace n’est plus celui de la page, mais un volume en trois dimensions, celui de la scène. Ils y dessinent le mouvement, distribuent les corps, leurs groupes, les y agencent.

Se servent-ils d’une écriture ? Plus facilement d’un système de notation, qui leur est propre le plus souvent : petits dessins dont, eux seuls, ont le secret et qui sert la mémoire, la reproduction de ce qui est créé.

La place de la création chorégraphique dans ce que les anthropologues qualifient de « culture de l’écrit » est suffisamment singulière pour donner à réfléchir. Ainsi l’anthropologue Jack Goody1 évoquait succinctement, et lui aussi par analogie avec la musique, quelques rapports de l’écriture et du ballet : « Dans les domaines de l’art, la littératie a des effets cruciaux ». « Écrire de la musique” a des effets sur la musique même, “écrire un ballet” aussi a des conséquences sur la danse, sa codification, son apprentissage, sa transmission« . Il remarquait par ailleurs l’inflation liée à l’usage du terme écriture, un usage inflationniste venant relayer celui du terme « langage ».

Je crois qu’il est abusif de dire qu’un ballet s’écrit; l’écriture au sens littéraire du terme ne sert pas la création chorégraphique. S’il faut laisser tomber la comparaison avec la musique ou même renoncer à l’écriture telle que valorisée dans une culture de l’écrit, c’est pour mieux apercevoir les particularités de la création dans le domaine de la danse.

En danse classique académique, l’interprète, danseuse ou danseur, est roi ; dans la danse contemporaine, la figure majeure est celle du chorégraphe.2 

Les ballets classiques du répertoire racontent des histoires, la trame ou plutôt l’argument en est fixé dans un livret dont les actes et scènes permettent le découpage en un certain nombre de tableaux. La musique, généralement spécifiquement écrite pour le ballet joue un rôle essentiel, elle précède et accompagne la création du ballet. Les danseurs possèdent un vocabulaire codifié (depuis les 6 positions de base) et ont à leur disposition, un ensemble de pas et sauts, et même des variations (enchainements de pas), qui ont façonné leur corps et leur esprit pendant de longues années. Ils seront jaugés sur leur capacité à faire oublier la technique tout en la possédant, à la sublimer au profit d’une expression émotionnelle qui ne doit rien laisser paraitre de quelque labeur corporel et pourtant la performance (nombre de tours, élévation des sauts) se doit d’être présente. 

Dans le ballet classique, les critiques (ceux qui produisent une écriture sur la danse) magnifient les interprètes, danseuses et danseurs étoiles, rendent compte de leur fidélité ou de leur originalité dans l’interprétation d’un rôle, ce qui suppose de la part de ces évaluateurs, la mémoire et la comparaison avec des interprétations plus anciennes. La transmission et la mémoire des interprétations passées sont généralement assurées par d’ex-danseurs étoiles. Ils accompagnement la répétition et surtout l’interprétation de ces rôles par leurs nouveaux titulaires. Cette activité de transmission peut coexister avec le recours à des enregistrements filmés. Aujourd’hui, des systèmes de notation peuvent aussi permettre d’enregistrer des œuvres, de les conserver, de les transmettre. Cette pratique permet d’archiver les œuvres avec plus de détails et de précisions que ne le ferait un film ou la mémoire des interprètes d’une époque. Il existe ainsi, parait-il, des archivistes passionnés, pas plus frustrés ou rebutés par une notation laborieuse et peu dansée, que des archéologues par le fastidieux maniement d’une brosse à dents sur d’antiques objets déterrés.

Les œuvres dites de danse contemporaine ne se donnent pas pour objet premier de raconter une histoire. Certains, dans ce cadre, ont pu vouloir s’affranchir de tout assujettissement à la musique, travailler à contre musique où même sans musique du tout. Les mots et parfois du texte ont pu prendre place dans les créations : mots détournés, séquences verbales non utilisées dans leur sens littéral, mots versés par les danseurs eux-mêmes dans leur idiome maternel comme ressources émotionnelles nouvelles (exemple : Pina Bausch). Certains courants, par leur rapport au texte, au verbal, et aux rôles sociaux expressifs, ont d’ailleurs pu être qualifiés de danse-théâtre ou l’inverse.

Dans la danse contemporaine, les danseurs peuvent être plus impliqués dans la création, dans un rôle moins prédéterminé à l’avance; l’interprète comme figure disparaît au profit d’un collectif : la « compagnie ». La création chorégraphique contemporaine abolit la hiérarchie de la danse classique. Implicitement, le personnage promu et reconnu est celui du chorégraphe et non l’interprète.

La création de danse contemporaine, à défaut d’« argument » ou d’histoires écrites, peut cependant, dans les programmes de ballets, comporter des intitulés de pièces, clés d’un code à décrypter le temps d’une représentation. Les danseurs et créateurs se dérobent de moins en moins à un commentaire ou à une rationalisation de leur propre production, encouragés en cela par des journalistes ou des universitaires. Ils sont aussi souvent guidés par le souci d’une reconnaissance académique leur faisant abandonner une légendaire réserve observée par d’autres artistes pour qui l’œuvre ne doit pas avoir besoin d’une explicitation et se suffit à elle-même.

La danse contemporaine est donc loin d’être sans rapport avec le verbal, écrit ou non, et souvent du texte est partie intégrante de ce qui peut plus largement être défini comme une scénographie. Les moyens modernes permettent de mettre le texte sur scène en situation, sous forme électronique, sorte de sous-titrage de la pièce dansée, ou même écrit et lu sur scène par le chorégraphe (exemple : Merce Cunningham).

Le chorégraphe : figure créatrice majeure de la danse en raison graphique3 ? 

C’est la promotion du chorégraphe comme personnage central et créatif de la danse contemporaine qui, en première approche, retient l’attention. Partant de ce constat, au lieu de s’évertuer à faire de la danse une écriture, pourquoi ne pas s’interroger sur la spécificité de la chorégraphie et même la rapprocher d’autres genres artistiques contenant le graphique dans leur désignation, scénographie, photographie, ou graphes ?

Le mouvement, le geste, la danse naissent de sa pratique, pas d’une écriture a priori, et il n’y a pas plus de transmission par l’écrit a posteriori. Il se trouve que le corps du danseur est son propre stylo. Il n’y a pas de médiation, d’extériorité. Il n’y a pas d’abstraction antérieure ; en ce sens, la pratique va directement à la pratique et ne passe pas par les mots.4

Il n’empêche, divers chorégraphes interrogés peuvent dire se donner à eux-mêmes des modes de notation, croquis, codages, pour se souvenir5. Merce Cunningham dit volontiers se servir de l’informatique et des images ainsi produites pour créer, à partir d’une combinatoire de pas et séquences de pas, distribués de façon aléatoire entre danseurs et groupes de danseurs. Il utilise ainsi les ressources créatives de cette combinatoire qui n’est pas une écriture mais se situe sûrement en raison graphique comme un langage mathématique.

Une exploration plus systématique des modes de création tels que livrés par les chorégraphes eux-mêmes devrait permettre de vérifier cette place relativement marginale de l’écriture.

Conclusion

Le chorégraphe endosse la création. Même s’il n’est pas danseur, il l’a généralement été. Il s’est forgé un style, s’est constitué un vocabulaire de pas, de formes corporelles. Il a utilisé toute sorte de ressources : celles des corps des danseurs, habillés ou non, souvent épurés, dénudés ou au contraire, les a rhabillés en d’étranges formes. Les corps modelant au contact des matières d’autres créations (Alwin Nikolais), il a pu sortir de l’espace scénique, inviter à danser dans la rue, dans les jardins… En général, il a fini par constituer une compagnie, faite de danseurs choisis selon ses critères corporels ou de personnalité.  

La danse contemporaine a promu la chorégraphie et le chorégraphe comme figures centrales de la création, rapprochant aussi cette activité de celle des scénographes. Produits artistiques d’une culture graphique plus que de l’écrit ? C’est une piste de réflexion suggérée. 

Plus largement, on peut se demander quelle est la présence de l’écriture avant pendant et après la production du ballet et sa signification. Plus largement les œuvres artistiques sont rarement hors culture de l’écrit. Les expositions de peinture ou de sculpture donnent lieu à des catalogues, les films ont leurs scénarios, leurs synopsis et des scripts qui correspondent à un métier particulier. La comparaison avec le domaine cinématographique pour la manière dont le chorégraphe engendre plusieurs métiers dans une même création serait peut-être plus appropriée et riche d’enseignements que le rapprochement avec l’œuvre musicale et sa partition. 

Si la création en danse ne s’écrit guère, l’écriture sur la danse est un défi que connaissent plus particulièrement les critiques et chroniqueurs spécialisés.
